New Version of the Form I-485 to be Required as of September 18, 2026

Posted by James Eiss | Aug 24, 2026 | 0 Comments

On August 18, 2026, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced that it will publish a revised edition of the Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status on September 18, 2026. This change is similar to USCIS's recent announcement regarding new editions of Form I-539 and Form I-765 being required beginning September 15, 2026.

The 09/18/26 edition of the form will replace the existing 01/20/25 version. There will be no grace period in the switch over of the form. This means that any Forms I-485 filed on or after September 18, 2026 MUST be filed with the 09/18/26 version of the form. Mail-in submissions must be postmarked before September 18, 2026 in order for the older version to be accepted.

USCIS has posted a preview version of the 09/18/26 edition of Form I-485. This preview version is for review only and will NOT be accepted before September 18, 2026.

Applicants should always check edition date at the bottom left of their forms before submitting. The USCIS webpage for each form can be used to verify the currently accepted edition.
